Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

Did you know vertigo is not actually a diagnosis, it is a symptom of a diagnosis? In fact, symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, nausea, and imbalance, are all very common symptoms associated with vestibular dysfunction.

This is where we come in! VRT is a specialized form of physiotherapy used to treat and manage symptoms associated with vestibular disorders and related conditions.

Vestibular disorders are typically the result of a disturbance in the body’s balance system. Put simply, the balance system consists of your vestibular organs located within your inner ear, specific areas of your brain, and the connection between your inner ear and brain.

Your physiotherapist will assess your vestibular system by looking at things like balance, head eye coordination, and your tolerance for certain head movements. Based on the assessment findings, your physiotherapist will develop a customized exercise program to help retrain your balance system. VRT aims to alleviate problems caused by vestibular disorders such as vertigo, dizziness, gaze instability, and/or imbalance and falls.

  • I had a great experience with InFocus rehabilitation. Dealing with vertigo is not easy, and Colleen helped me recuperate in a matter of days. She was a saviour! A very informative, attentive, gentle, and kind person. She knows and understands her work really well, and remained incredibly professional. She even came on her day off to help me with my vertigo. I am so thankful for her, and highly recommend Colleen and the clinic.

  • For over 25 years, I experienced vertigo, and was resigned to living with it. However, I was fortunate enough to be referred to InFocus Physiotherapy for treatment. After diagnosis, I learned that I had Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which Colleen successfully treated through a course of physiotherapy adjustments and home exercises. The positive change that this treatment has made for me is amazing. Prior to treatment, I had unconsciously been using various adjustments and coping strategies to deal with my vertigo, such as walking defensively to avoid losing my balance. Now I realize that I was living with a level of instability that I no longer have to tolerate. Colleen, my physiotherapist, was warm, caring, and extremely professional. She took the time to explain my diagnosis and treatment protocol, provided at-home exercises, and shared updates with my kinesiologist and family doctor. The support I received made me feel both confident and well-cared for. Julia, in the front office, sets the tone for every visit with her upbeat, friendly, and efficient demeanour. I’ve required several physiotherapist treatments in the past and I can easily say that this has been my best experience.
